Bäume und Sträucher
(Elfish Echo, Drittland Records, 2007)

Es gibt ein Land , in dem wir nicht länger festgelegt sind auf Identitäten, Rollen, Geschlechter, Gewohnheiten: Drittland. Die Transformationen sind schmerzhaft. Für jeden einzelnen und für alle … manchmal scherzhaft.

Am Ende steht Freiheit.

Elfish Echo … Luka Höfler, oder Burkhard, wie ich ihn manchmal nenne, serviert uns “Bäume & Sträucher” und kickt uns mit eher leisen, aber wohldosierten Tönen in genau diese Richtung.

Eine exquisite Auswahl, wenn es um Sound geht: crisp und eher hell als dunkel. Wunderbar hölzern-organische Zupfereien, die wohl auf dem Shamisen erzeugt, aber durch allerlei VST-Filter gejagt wurden … oder wie man die Dinger auf’m MAC nennt.

Plötzlich abgrundtiefe, samtige Bässe, die uns gerade so stark einlullen, dass unser Körper drauf reagiert und wir uns TANZmusik … LEBEN !!! wünschen. Wird natürlich stehenden Fußes augenblicklich zurückgewiesen … und wir sind froh, wieder in die Meditation zurückkehren zu dürfen.

An manchen Stellen verirrt sich eine tonal gemeinte Tonfolge in ungekonnte Jazzbereiche, wo allerdings sofort Absicht und Kalkül (oder Zufall? ) jeden Fehler auf dezente Art so geradekrummbiegen, dass erst RECHT MUSIK draus wird.

Nicht Dekonstruktion, sondern Konstruktion.

Immer leichtfüssig / reduziert und offen / dabei distinguiert und auch in der Improvisation diszipliniert.

Ohne Bassdrum

… skelettierter Rhythmus.

… trocken.

Trockener, todernster Humor.

Für mich ist das hier aurale Kunst.

There is a land where our identites, social and gender roles are no longer clearly defined and our habits are shattered: drittland. Those transformations are painful for all of us… but sometimes amusing, too. At the end awaits freedom. That’s where elfish echo … pushes us with the quiet and well dosed tones of “bäume & sträucher”. An exquisite selection of sounds, crisp and light rather than dark. Wonderful woody-organic pluckings of the shamisen … Then suddenly bass, abyssal and velvet - just lulling the listener enough to provoke bodily reactions and the wish for dance-music and LIFE - which, of course, is immediately rejected, and we’re happy to switch back into meditation … Construction rather than deconstruction. Always light-footed and tidied up, open, while at the same time distinguished and disciplined even when improvising. Without bass drum - skeletal rhythm. Dry. Dry, deadly serious humour. To me, this is aural art.

“Haunting and brooding dark ambient offering from Germany’s fatagaga, third in a series named after that famous, delicious, opium-laced drink. It’s a great, slow-moving, continuous wall of sound that breaks things up by jumping to a rhythm track in places, but is somehow a bit predictable and lacks an essential element of “surprise.” Think of Richard H. Kirk teaming up with Hungry Ghost and you’ll get an idea of the overall sound …”

“… the concept album “The Celebration of the Chameleon” deals with fast technological developments which will rapidly change our world and/or replace biological evolution. The athmospheric CD contains 13 tracks with deep experimental/organic flavoured textures, effects and occasionally some slow beats. Well, listening and experiencing its content is a rather weird experience, as you never know what`s waiting for you on every new track. This is in-depth, slowly morphing and well produced music, but certainly not easy ambient. I can`t compare it with anything I know in this genre.”

“Musik lag auch schon vor Adam und Eva in der Luft. Wind, Regen, Donner, Dinosaurier zum Beispiel sorgten für ein reichhaltiges Spektrum an Tönen. Dann kam der Mensch und brachte in Form, was er an Geräuschen hörte, bis hin zu Barock, Klassik, Rock und Pop. Ähnlich ungezähmt wie die Töne aus der Natur klang nun im Kulturbunker Mülheim die Musik von Stefan Zöllner alias Fatagaga und Luka Höfler, der sich Elfish Echo nennt. Es war das erste von zwei Klangprobe-Specials zur c / o pop - und die beiden Sound-Pioniere machten der experimentierfreudigen Kölner Szene beim internationalen Festival alle Ehre. Sie nahmen das Publikum mit auf eine Reise in den elektronischen Urwald. Und dort wimmelte es von Klängen, Harmonien, Melodien, Rhythmen, die so fremdartig anmuteten, als seien sie nicht von Menschenhand ausgedacht und geschaffen worden…”

Die CD-Rs Laudanum Vol 2 und Vol 3 (Satori Hype Records) evozieren Unterwasserlandschaften und tiefe Höhlen, an deren Ende aber immer Licht zu flimmern scheint. Dunkele pulsierende Töne schleichen sich an die Oberfläche, manchmal durchbricht ein zarter Rhythmus die Klangewebe - wer Bad Sector oder Crianoclast mag, der sollte hier nachhören, Tip!!!”

Drone music with ambient and white-noisy complexities that aurally remind me of breathing, the rushing of blood, trickling water, bone-socket pops and muffled insect chirping. All the tracks are worth a listen. *Recommend*

fatagaga - Laudanum Vol 1 (Soleilmoon)

Gentle reader, you may recall my lauding Mute Records with the phrase once “If it’s on Mute, buy it!” Yes, I too have my pet causes. I can steadfastly state that I will only ever use this on two other record labels, Sub Rosa and Soleilmoon/Staalplaat. And look, it’s a Soleilmoon CD …

The name “fatagaga” comes from the collages of our old friends Max Ernst and Hans Arp. So far, so good. Laudanum is a term used for a tincture of opium that was all the range among the effete artists of the victorian age. We all know what opium does. Laudanum is somnambulent music, all gurgling synths and tectonic arrangements. The press release draws comparisons to Brian Eno’s Apollo and Jon Hassel’s Fourth World: Possible Musics, which is not so far off. I also pick up traces of the more stately, older FAX records, Terre Thaemlitz’s ultra-minimal outlings, and, in particular, an oldie from Instinct Ambient, The SETI Project.

Very detached in mood and time, an album like this sounds (trying to avoid cheeseball ramifictions) alien. I want to take this album to the top of a hill far from all civilization and feel the wind against my skin. Hell, I want to have albums like these as the only artifacts of our civilization in my personal collective unconscious. (MS 01/02)

Note to Fatagaga: Do not pepper your press releases with hyperbole and comparisons! I would personally question the wisdom of naming influences like Eno, Steve Roach and Thomas Koener. It’s all so unnecessary because this is actually a fine piece of work. It rarely breaks sweat and occasionally the low bass drones mess with your speakers in a “maybe I should have mastered this recording” kind of way. Laudanum is a land of half-light and flickering moths. It is a dream world that both invites you in and shuts the door gently. The walls seem to mutter to you in words that you can’t quite understand. It is not an entirely unpleasant place to be.
